Istanbul Atatürk Airport Collaborative Decision Making (CDM) Project Launched
A Preliminary Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI), Turkish Airlines (THY) and TAV Airports to increase the capacity of Atatürk Airport by approximately 30%.
In his speech during the signing ceremony held at the TAV Airport Hotel, DHMI General Manager Orhan Birdal stated that the Collaborative Decision Making Project has already been implemented at more than 30 large airports, particularly those which had to implement capacity optimization due to the challenges of high aircraft and passenger traffic. Highlighting the fact that the project will require a long term process, Birdal said, “Atatürk Airport will benefit from a 30% capacity increase when this project is fully implemented.” Birdal released the following information on the project: The project involves the efficient utilization and management of existing airports and resources in order to maximize the productivity of numerous corporations. This project is a corporate culture of sharing and execution of operations for corporations sharing the same basic goal. Capacity losses shall be prevented through this project. 'On-time’ operation performance will improve in aircraft traffic. Waiting and delay times will be decreased. A reduction in expenses will be achieved through the optimum utilization of resources.”
Talking about the significant improvements that have been achieved in relation to speeding the air traffic and increasing capacity during the last year, Birdal continued, “We are going to break ground with new operations in the next period as well. We will continue with efforts to increase the capacity of our airport by building new parking spaces as well as repairing the existing aprons. We have already achieved a 25% increase in capacity for the 2011 summer season as a result of work carried out during 2010. Our capacity per hour has increased from 40 to 50 flights. We are waiting for these works to be finalized to see even better results in relation to capacity. Upon completion of these projects, we will continue our air traffic services with a much improved capacity for the 2012 summer season.”
THY General Manager Temel Kotil remarked that THY has become a global brand, one of the most talked about corporations at meetings abroad during 2011. Giving credit to DHMI and TAV for their investments, which led to the increase in performance, Kotil also stated that resources would be utilized with even greater efficiency through this new project. Emphasizing that the Collaborative Decision Making Project collaboration consists of not just signing a document, but that it would bring a new system to Istanbul Atatürk Airport, Kotil continued, "Through projects such as this, we believe that Turkish Airlines will become the best airport in the world with the highest number of passengers and capacity. Branded airports worldwide now want to come to Turkey. Recently, we welcomed Asiana, a 5 star airline company, into our airport. This is very pleasing for us.
TAV Airports CEO M Sani Sener added that the signing of the Collaborative Decision Making Project protocol by the top 3 players of the sector was a very important step for them. He continued, "This project will provide the most efficient utilization of the resources and infrastructure at Atatürk Airport. The essence of this project is efficiency and good communication. We all have certain data in hand. We shall increase both the capacity and passenger satisfaction by turning this data into information and communicating it to others.”
